Participants were asked in the questionnaire which symptoms they had before diagnosis, they could choose from a set lit of symptoms and could then specify other symptoms not listed. Participants with NMOSD had between two and 12 symptoms, and a median of 7.5 symptoms (IQR = 3.75). The most common symptoms before NMOSD diagnosis were loss of clear vision (n=13, 72.22%), eye pain (n=13, 72.22%), muscle spasms (n=12, 66.67%), and sensory loss (n=12, 66.67%).
 
Participants were asked a follow up question about their quality of life while experiencing these symptoms.  Quality of life was rated on a Likert scale from one to seven, where one is “Life was very distressing” and seven is “Life was great”.  The median quality of life for participants with NMOSD was between 1.00 and 2.00, for all of the symptoms listed in the questionnaire, this is in the “Life was verydistressing” to “Life was distressing” range
